Most towns at Jæren were built based on the construction of the railway over Jæren in 1874-78. For every 2-6 km a railway station was built, and soon small villages and towns erupted based on agriculture, commerce, small industries and crafts. In 2023 Vigrestad had 2.123 inhabitants

Practial tips for your stay and journey in Norway

  • Water for consumption: you can drink water from the tap. You do not need to buy bottled water
  • Wine and alcohol: are only sold in the shops of Vinmonopolet. Regular opening hours Monday-Friday 10.00-1800, Saturdays 10.00-16.00, can be different locally, please check at the website to find location of shops and more information at the website
  • Beer can be bought in most grocery shops. Sales of beer are open between 08.00-20.00 at weekdays and 08.00-18.00 on Saturdays and days before holidays. Opening hours may be different locally.
  • Shops: in general shops are closed on Sundays. In designated tourist area you may find open grocery shops. Petrol stations are open all days,many of them have a small selection of  elementary grocery articles.
  • Museums: are closed on Mondays
  • Payment cards: use av cards for payment are very common. Only few small places and shops accept only cash. You may experience difficulties by paying with cash, because many shops do not have change.
  • Digitalized information: as a traveler you will find needed information by apps and homepages, very little information has to be sought by telephone calls.
  • Warm clothes and rainwear: bring clothes according to season. But it is wise to bring some warm clothes anyhow. Always bring rainwear.
  • Weather: conditions may change rapidly during your stay, even several times during the day. Please take this in consideration when you hike especially in the mountains
  • Weather forecast: check weather forecast for where you will stay or travel at https://www.yr.no/en . This Norwegian weather service is normally very precise also for your local area.
  • Driving in Norway: we have just a few highways with speed limits at 100-120 km/h. Normal speed limit in the countryside is 70-80 km/h. In cities / populated areas 40-60 km/h. Driving in Norway you can in general estimate to travel a distance of 60 km pr. hour.
  • Road and traffic information: see official information about ongoing and planned work at roads, timetable for ferries, information about tunnels and bridges, driving conditions etc. at this official website. Also webams.
